If you are one of the many in our neighborhood that continue to smell the Superior Essex plant on Southeast Parkway you can complain. Brent Knoll is the plant manager and his number is 790-4501. He says he will return all calls from people who leave their name and number and says he wants to personally meet with the callers.

Thanks Mr. Thompson for the prompt response. I trust the permitting package you are submitting to the EPA includes sufficient remedial action to eliminate the air pollution currently being emitted by Superior Essex. The surrounding community is overwhelmingly residential, not industrial. It is time for the company to be a responsible neighbor, or leave. We don't need another contributor to weakened property values, and poor air quality.

Regards,

David Wallbaum

Mr. Wallbaum,

The Tennessee Division of Air Pollution Control has received your recent message, which was submitted to Barry Stephens by email on October 27, 2009. On behalf of Mr. Stephens, I would like to offer the following status update in response to your message.

As you may already know, Superior Essex has applied for a renewal of their Title V operating permit. The Division is currently processing their renewal application. As part of that renewal process, the Division has received numerous comments during the public comment period and at the public hearing. The Division expects to complete a document that will provide our response to those comments by early next week. The Division then intends to send the completed permitting package to EPA for their review by the end of next week. Final action on the permit application will not occur until the EPA review period has been completed.

I think that the "mishandling" of process materials to which you refer was addressed in a Notice of Violation (NOV), which was issued on August 7, 2009. In that letter, it was noted that the portable containers that are used for the collection of excess coating were being used without covers. The necessary covers are scheduled to be installed by the applicant on or before October 31. At this time, the August 7, 2009 NOV is the lone incident under enforcement review. This enforcement review is to evaluate the need for further enforcement action.

I hope that this message has addressed your concerns. If you have additional questions, you may simply reply to this message. Thank you for your inquiry.

Randy Thompson
TN Division of Air Pollution Control

Dear Director Stephens,

I am a resident of Polk Place located in Franklin. I have been following the ongoing local news regarding TDEC's review of Superior Essex's emissions concerns. Unfortunately Superior Essex is located about five blocks south of our home. Hearing the plant has been cited by TDEC for mishandling carcinogenic chemicals is a major concern. It is especially troublesome this so called "neighbor" has been, and continues to put our community at risk for the sake of short term profits. Foul odors from the plant cover our neighborhood with the prevailing southern winds.

Can you please advise what the next steps are for Superior Essex? I am sick and tired of walking our neighborhood and smelling the stench from the factory.

I appreciate your standing up for Franklin's best interest.

Regards,

David Wallbaum
